| Foundry 1: Lost Foam with Aaron Gist In this 2 to 3 hour class, participants will learn about the process of lost foam casting. Participants will learn about some of the tools and techniques associated with working foam, by making a foam model. The participants will also learn how to invest their model in a mixture of sand and clay into which we will pour molten aluminum. We’’ll then allow the casting to cool, and participants will learn how to “shake out” their sculptures, and how to remove sprues and vents and prepare their sculpture for finish work. Most students will come away from the course with a better understanding of the process of metal casting and a knowledge of some of the history of metals and foundry- as well as a cast sculpture, made by their own hands! Pricing: $250 per student Designed for students aged 14 or older Foundry 2: Casting Session with Aaron Gist Prerequisite: Foundry 1 or equivalent foundry experience Those who already have some foundry experience can work up some models on their own and jump in to one of our casting sessions! In this more independent format, participants will be responsible for creating their own models and molds in their own studio or shop. Participants of this level may be more actively involved in the actual pour if they choose. Current Pricing: Aluminum: Meeting with scheduled casting: $110 foundry fee plus $2.50 per lb cast Independent of a class: $180 firing fee plus $2.50 per lb cast Bronze: Meeting with scheduled casting: $150 foundry fee plus (current mkt bronze) Independent of a class: $240 foundry fee plus (current mky bronze) (Because of varying qualities of alloys and contamination, students may not bring their own metals to be cast, unless approved by instructor. Sorry, no cans.) To be added: Foundry 3: Ceramic Shell with Aaron Gist Prerequisite: Foundry 1 This is a multi-session workshop that focuses on the lost wax process. Wax working, spruing and venting, and shell building will be covered in addition to foundry practices and finishing tutorials. (Schedule and pricing tbd.) |
